Auf Wiedersehen Away

Not all, but most of the things I see while I'm away from you all.

So I just found this shirt for sale on ASOS. It’s $165.
Some things are just better off not knowing.

Sitting in the next to the window in Merle’s kitchen in Lübeck; watching Fringe and drinking Milo (something funny to have in a German pantry, so Australian) while Merle has a nanna nap. I just had a bath and my hair feels amazing.
I love spending time with my German lover. It’s been over a year and a half since she stayed with me in Melbourne, and almost five years since she hosted at my high school. Reunited, at last!

Just a quick one to say I’ve had an amazing Christmas with the Frey family - they took me up the mountain to ski; ensuring I had a white Christmas!

Although I miss my family today I feel so welcomed by Manuela, Tanja and Gabby that it doesn’t affect me so much. We also had a brunch with the grandparents full of cheese, smoked meats and even some traditional Swiss bread I helped (well, touched a total of three times) Manuela to make. It’s been a good month.

Heading to the hidden Christmas Markets in Munich

Dec 17th at 12PM / tagged: Salzburg. Austria. / 7 notes

Salzburg is so beautiful. So far I’ve spent most of both days in Old Town, getting a view over the city from Hohensalzburg castle and looking through the markets in Residenzplatz. I bought a few little gifts for the family too, and it snowed so heavily in the square.

Last night I had the pleasure of sharing my dorm with only one other person, a girl named Eevee from Sweden. We (well, I) drank red wine and I bought us some Ben & Jerry’s to share. We figuerd out how to turn on the television, but everything was dubbed in German (there is nothing worse than a dubbed J.D. in Scrubs) and so we couldn’t properly watch Kill Bill so we just ate and talked for hours about shitty ex boyfriends and her travels in New Zealand. It seems like everytime I make a friend overseas (that isn’t Maggi of course) they or I end up having to leave the next day, but I woke up to a nice little note left by her.

Now my dorm is full of Koreans that are nervous of me. Go figure.

I’m now travelling Austria after arriving from Helsinki on the 10th.

I’m so tired, I feel like my eyes are falling out of my head; but Vienna, the city I’m currently staying in, is beautiful. I’m leaving in an hour or so to spend my last night at the Adventmarkt vor der Karlskirche - the amount of Christmas markets going on is crazy, but the food is so good. Think Fladen brot, Gluhwein, Krapfen (filled donuts), Wurst, Punsch and so many variations of Kartofeln (potato)-ey goodness. I haven’t stopped eating since I got here.

oh my god, reykjavík+you=AMAZING

It’s a definite possibility… not that I know how it is in Iceland to get a job, or a house, but I fell in love with your country! It could be done…

I miss Iceland so much. I miss Maggi, and I didn’t get to spend enough time with Krista. I want to live there… I’ve been thinking of getting a one-year work visa, and setting up there for a while. I think I could do it. It all depends on how university pans out, but, I seriously think I want to spend a while in Reykjavik.

I’m in Stockholm, Sweden now, and a few things have happened that are worth writing about.

The first night I was here, I had three German dorm-mates. They were nice enough to ask me if I wanted to accompany them on their last night for a white hot chocolate - I can’t tell you how bored I’m getting hanging out with myself most of the time.
We went to this tiny two story coffee shop in Gamla Stan, with brick walls, low ceilings and candles and a spiral staircase down to the cellar; where we sat and slowly took off a layer of clothing at a time and even slowlier drank the bucket-sized portion of white hot chocolate we were served. Then we spent all night wandering around Gamla Stan and Stockholm central. I was sad to see them go the next day, mainly because I was said to be, once again, without nice company.

The next people to move into the dorm, and are currently sleeping here, are three high school boys. I don’t know about dorm etiquette, but I don’t think it’s kosher to put a lone girl into a room with three boys - who at once stage decided to very loudly watch what I think was a series about football players; with a storyline that had no lack of audible moans as the footballers slept with the cheerleaders.
Thankfully another lady has just been put in here (in her 30’s, I think), so it evens it out a little bit.

Today I went into Södermalm, and just wandered around looking through the shops. There’s a rockabilly gig tomorrow night at Debaser in Söder, that I’m considering going to depending on the cost. Reverend Horton Heat are playing; it’d be amazing to go see them play, despite yet again having no one to go with.

I just can’t wait to get to Zurich and spend Christmas with Manuela, and New Years Eve with my Melbourne ladies. It’ll be nice to have someone to hang out with for once.

I really thought Copenhagen was a terribly beautiful city. My favourite part was slowly wandering through the little cobblestone alley ways, picking through the tiny design stores and smelling all the roasted nuts and crepes from the sidewalk stalls. Still finding it hard to get used to the darkness at 3:30-4:00pm thing.

Last night I met up with Nanna Einarsdottir; Greta’s sister, and her friend Blanca from Spain, and we got drinks in the student bar. I can’t tell you how nice it was to socialise again - it was getting quite lonely there for a while, especially when your dorm-mates are all Swiss and decide to speak exclusively in their native tongue.

Now after a 5 hour train trip from Copenhagen, and an incredibly confusing Metro connection, I’m in Old Town, Stockholm. I’ve settled into my tiny hostel (I say tiny, but it’s actually very charming), made friends with the receptionist by making her tea, she made me Glogg (or Glühwein; mulled wine) and chatted to my German dorm-mates.

I also went and bought ingredients for spaghetti. I figured two weeks without a decent cooked meal was enough to spend the ~$15  on. I now have dinner for four nights, and just about wept at the taste of a non-dehydrated, non-fried, fresh meal.

Tomorrow I’m going to Södermalm, the bohemian part of Stockholm, to explore and poke around for a bit.

Almost healed…

Almost healed…

So I’ve arrived safely, navigated the Danish train systerm, settled into my (empty) hostel dorm, and explored the inner workings of the cobbled street city of Copenhagen.
I got pretty lost trying to navigate all the night-shopping, but eventually found my way back. I didn’t take a map, which kind of worked out in my favour, because I stumbled across some tiny gems that I’ll go visit tomorrow.
Also on tomorrow’s cards are the National Museum and the National Museet fur Kunst (National Gallery), then probably wandering up to see the Little Mermaid. I like that most of the attractions related to the culture here are free, the way it should be (take note, overpriced National Gallery of Victoria exhibitions). There are Picassos and Rembrants in the NMK too, which is exciting.
So far, even though I’m in a hostel, I haven’t met anyone new because my 4 person dorm is empty. I guess this is kind of a blessing in terms of privacy, but I’m starting to feel the lone traveller thing. I’m not used to be alone like this. Soon I’ll head down to the bar and get a cider and read a book, once happy hour starts.

Saying goodbye to Oslo making my way to Copenhagen, Denmark on an overnight ferry that apparently has free wi-fi and is so much like a floating skyscraper (seriously, 15 levels) that I may be the tiniest bit worried she won’t stay afloat.
Free dinner and breakfast, thankfully. I’m going to spend the next couple of hours before we depart exploring a little bit.

Oooh, I wouldn't be too optimistic about Copenhagen being less expensive...

It’s fine. I will do grocery shopping and live off packet noodles. x
